Taxi driver charged in gas station bombing to challenge admissibility of confession statements

Twenty-seven-year-old terrorism accused, Jhonny Boodram, who is one of the taxi drivers charged in connection with the deadly gas station bombing has informed the Court, through his Attorney Mikel Puran, that he intends to challenge the admissibility of any confession statement.

Boodram together with Daniel Alexander Ramirez Poedemo, Alexander Bettencourt and Kystal LaCruz have been jointly charged in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court with terrorism, while the other suspects, Wayne Corriea, Ramesh Pramdeo and Jennifer Rodriguez are facing a similar charge at the Leonora Magistrates’ Court.

The October 27, 2025 bombing claimed the life of a six-year-old girl.

Boodram is accused of transporting the suspected bombers to the city to execute the deadly attack. But through his attorney, he is claiming he had no knowledge of the plan to bomb the Mobil Gas Station located on Regent Street, Georgetown.

When the case was called today in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty announced that Boodram’s attorney, who was not present at the time, had submitted a bundle of documents as part of disclosure by the Defence.

“Mr. Boodram’s attorney is indicating that he witnesses to challenge the admissibility of any confession statement whether in recording or in writing,” the Chief Magistrate informed the Court.

Meanwhile, Attorney-at-law Tifaine Rutherford, who appeared for Kystal LaCruz informed the Court that they will also be presenting statements on behalf of LaCruz.

Venezuelan nationals – Daniel Alexander Ramirez Poedemo, the prime suspect, and Alexander Bettencourt remain unrepresented.

However, on inquiring by the acting Chief Magistrate, both Ramirez Poedemo and Bettencourt indicated that they would like to secure Counsel, but have not been able to make contact with their families in Venezuela to do so.

The Acting Chief Magistrate instructed a Prison officer present to ensure the Prison Service facilitates communication between the suspects and their families.

The Magistrate was informed that while Bettencourt has been able to make contact with his wife, Ramirez Poedemo has not been able to make contact with his mother. The prison officer told the Court that through the Welfare Division, the Prison Service will continue to assist.

The Defence Attorneys in the case have been given until January 28, 2025 to complete the disclosure of all statements. It is hoped that by then, both Ramirez Poedemo and Bettencourt would be able to secure counsel.

The case will come up again in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on February 4 at 10am for report.
