Mahipaul accuses WIN of making no moves to build united Opposition in Parliament

Attempts to have a united opposition in the National Assembly to hold the Government’s feet to the fire appear to be drifting away, and Member of Parliament for the APNU, Ganesh Mahipaul, is laying the blame at the feet of the WIN party.

In a statement on Tuesday, MP Mahipaul said the APNU has made several attempts to engage the main opposition – We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) – with a view of establishing a collective opposition capable of holding the ruling People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Government accountable, but he said regrettably, the WIN party led by Azruddin Mohamed, has shown no real interest in such collaborative approach.

The two sides had reportedly agreed on a proposed agenda during telephone meetings, including the composition of Parliamentary committees, the Chairmanship of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) and Sectoral committees, the appointment of Shadow Ministers, and other parliamentary matters.

However, MP Mahipaul said since the last phone call weeks ago, there has been no movement on the part of WIN.

“WIN undertook to propose a date, time, and venue for a meeting. Months have since passed, and no such meeting has materialized,” he said.

The APNU MP said in the absence of cooperation from WIN, the APNU coalition will continue to represent the people. The party has since proceeded with the naming of its own “shadow ministers”.

“Our Members of Parliament will continue to discharge their constitutional responsibilities as an Opposition. However, We cannot continue to waste valuable time pursuing engagements where there is no willingness to act together in a mature manner. We will continue to be disposed to working with other opposition forces. Hopefully WIN sees the wisdom of working together,” MP Mahipaul said.

Mahipaul said WIN Leader appears to be more interested is protecting himself from his “legal jeopardy”.

In an interview on GoMoseley Radio this morning, WIN Member of Parliament, Tabitha Sarabo-Halley confirmed that the opposition political parties in the National Assembly have held discussions on their parliamentary approach and agenda.

However, she was unable to indicate whether those discussions have yielded any progress or success.

The National Assembly is made up of three opposition political parties, WIN, APNU and Forward Guyana Movement.
