With One Communications preparing to shut down its 2G network at the end of October, it is continuing its push for customers with those old cell phones that can only work on the 2G network, and those persons with 2G sims in their phones to upgrade before they are left without service.
As part of the efforts to encourage the remaining customers still to make the upgrade, One Communications is offering free mobile devices for those with devices that cannot upgrade to the existing network and free SIM card swaps for others, that will allow them to keep their old numbers while having the new phone on the upgraded network.
“We will tell you this is where you can get, a replacement handset for zero dollars, we will give you a replacement handset or we will have a special deal for you to buy the smartphone and please go to this location. We have gone out on caravans, we have gone to places, told the 800 people that have 2G sims that we will be at this location on a Saturday and three people show up for a whole day, and this is real important”, Chief Operations Officer at One Communications, Randall Hewitt said.
Company officials have been reaching out to those customers on the 2G service directly through text messages and phone calls, but many are still to make the upgrade. The company might now be forced to head out into various communities for direct interactions with subscribers still on the 2G network.
Customers with mobile phones still showing “2G”, “E” or “EDGE” in the device’s status bar are the ones required to make the upgrade.
The upgrade all forms part of One Communications further modernizing its mobile and data services. The company intends to spend US$25 million this year on the upgrade, which will see more customers across its network enjoying a better quality of data service.
