49-year-old Community Relations Officer from Central Rupununi, Ken Faria, was charged and remanded to jail today for the murder of well-known Rupununi tour guide, Leon Baird.
The 38-year-old tour guide was found dead on the 25th January in a car that was parked on the eastern bank of the Rupununi River in South Rupununi. The body was badly burnt, and Police investigators said they also found the remains of two cows that had been shot to death close to the murder scene.
In a statement this morning, the Police said the murder accused, Ken Faria, appeared in Court this morning before the Acting Chief Magistrate. He was not required to enter a plea to the indictable murder charge, and was remanded to prison until the 31st March 2026.
The Prosecution’s case is that sometime between the 23rd and 25th January, Faria murdered Baird.
A post mortem examination done on the man’s body revealed the cause of death to be given as burns. DNA samples were also obtained as part of the investigation.
During the early stages of the investigations, a number of other persons were also taken into custody and questioned. It was also suspected that the murder was linked to recent reports of an increase in cattle rustling in the South Rupununi.
