A 26-year-old Prison Officer attached to the Mazaruni Prison in Region Seven was taken into Police custody this morning following the discovery of a quantity of marijuana stashed under his bullet proof vest, and another quantity at his living quarters.

According to a Police statement, at around 6:45 this morning, the Prison Officer was part of the briefing in compound of the Mazaruni Prison when his bulletproof vest appeared bulky.

A search was conducted and led to the discovery of a transparent bulky parcel containing marijuana leaves, seeds and stems concealed in the vest.

The Police were summoned to the Prison and the substance was weighed in the presence of the suspect and amounted to 474.6 grams.

The Police said further enquiries led to a search at the suspect’s living quarters within the prison compound. During that search, the lawmen found an additional black bulky parcel containing a transparent package with more marijuana leaves, seeds and stems on the man’s bed.

That quantity was weighed in his presence and amounted to 27.6 grams.

The suspect and the marijuana were escorted to the Bartica Police Station. He remains in custody and is likely to face charges this week.
