One day after he was arrested at a checkpoint to the Mazaruni Prison with over 800 grams of marijuana in his possession, Prison Officer Joel Johnson appeared at the Bartica Magistrates’ Court and pleaded guilty to the charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
With the guilty plea, the 21-year-old was sentenced to three years in prison and fined $30,000.
A statement from the Guyana Police Force explained that on Tuesday evening, Johnson returned to the Mazaruni Prison after four days of time off, and he was subjected to a mandatory search.
During the search, he handed over a backpack to be checked and in that backpack, the Prison Officer on duty found the 800 grams of marijuana stashed in Irish Spring soap boxes and Colgate toothpaste boxes. The marijuana was wrapped in transparent plastic.
The young prison officer, who hails from Clonbrook on the East Coast of Demerara, was immediately arrested and told of the offence and handed over to the Police.
He appeared in Court this morning, and opted not to waste the Court’s time. He indicated his guilty plea to the Court and was slapped with the jail sentence.
