With the Guyana Prison Service stepping up efforts to clamp down on the smuggling of contraband items into the prisons, another Prison Officer has found himself facing charges before the Courts.
The 22-year-old Prison Officer, Keon Webster, was today remanded to jail after he was charged with the smuggling of marijuana into the prison.
The young man has denied the allegations.
The Court heard that on the 15th of June 2019, the man attempted to smuggle 120 grams of marijuana.
The marijuana was found in a bag belonging to the Prison Officer. Through his Attorney, the youth said he does not know how the marijuana got into his bag. The prohibited item was found after the man subjected himself to a search as he reported for duty.
He was immediately arrested. The Magistrate has denied him bail until the next Court hearing.
