A prison guard attached to the Georgetown Prison has been arrested and will face charges for marijuana possession and attempting to smuggle the same marijuana into the Camp Street prison.
Officials at the prison have confirmed the arrest of the prison guard who has been in the employ of the Prison Service for the past three years.
The bust was made on Tuesday night, moments after the man returned from a visit to a nearby shop to purchase food.
The package of marijuana and tobacco leaves was found on him during a search as he headed back into the prison to take up duty.
Just recently, a number of marijuana packages and other illegal items including cellphones and sim cards, were discovered during searches at the Camp Street jail.
At the time, the Deputy Director of Prisons, Gladwin Samuels, admitted that he believes some prison guards may have been involved in smuggling the items into the jailhouse. He said the Prison is in the process of purchasing a new full body scanner that should greatly assist its security efforts.
