Guyana likely to see increased trade and expanded role of US Companies in the country

United States Ambassador to Guyana, Nicole Theriot, believes Guyana and the US have made “incredible progress” in the area of trade and commerce, with a number of U.S companies establishing themselves in Guyana.

Guyana’s rapid economic growth, thanks to its booming Oil and Gas Sector, and moves to diversify the country’s economy are being seen as key to attracting new companies and businesses, but Ambassador Theriot believes there is a need for some legislative and regulatory changes to attract more foreign investors.

In 2024, trade between Guyana and the United States surpassed US$4.7 billion, and according to Ambassador Theriot, that number will increase.

“I think we only expect that number to continue to grow. More and more US companies are waking up to the opportunities here in Guyana and they are finding incredible Guyanese partners to work with – that’s really a big focus of ours. And as you know, in September 2023, we opened a US Department of Commerce Office inside the Embassy, and they work as matchmakers, finding local private sector companies to work with US companies, and that’s really important to us, we want it to be a partnership and not a one sided relationship,” Ambassador Theriot said during an appearance on SOURCES.

In 2025, US net imports of crude from Guyana rose to record levels.

ExxonMobil Guyana and its co-venturers in the Stabroek Block have been rapidly expanding their operations. In January, the Stabroek Block operators produced more than 900,000 barrels of oil per day.

The Ambassador now puts that number to 1.3 million barrels of oil per day.

The US Ambassador said doing business with Guyana is not limited to the Oil and Gas Sector, with major investments and partnerships being made in sectors such as Infrastructure,  Agriculture, Security, Information Technology, Health and Education.
