National Defence Institute launches Certificate in Defence Studies programme

The National Defence Institute has launched a Certificate in Defence Studies Programme.

The 16-week long programme, is already in its 10th week, and has brought together 14 members from the Joint Services to undergo extensive training in Defence Security and Development Research.

The programme is intended to foster innovation, and is expected to also help the men and women in uniform utilize civil military approaches to teach and analyze Defence policies and Leadership strategies.

Prime Minister, Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips said the launch of the Certificate in Defence Studies Programme marks an important step in the country’s development in the area of National Defence and Security.

“This Certificate in Defence Studies now underway at the National Defence Institute goes beyond and must go beyond the traditional course. It reflects, it delivers forward looking investment in our people aimed at developing strategic thinkers, more confident and capable leaders, and a security system better prepared to respond to challenges that emanate from the world system, regional dynamics and our own internal realities. This programme isn’t just theory, it is about strengthening judgment, improving decision making and deepening our understanding of the complex and evolving environment in which we must operate,” the Prime Minister said.

He said the programme is helping to equip the country’s security personnel with the requisite skills and knowledge needed to lead with clarity, adapt with confidence, and serve with purpose.

“It is about building professionals who can operate across domains, and here we talk about land, air, maritime, cyber and of course a deep understanding of how these spaces intersect in modern security operations. Yet, we must not discard theories because all grand strategies must are built around deep understanding of not only the central causes of conflict and war but also the basis on which enduring progress, peace and development are erected,” Prime Minister Phillips said.

Chief of Defence Staff, Brigadier Omar Khan said the programme is not a routine undertaking, explaining that it represents an investment in the intellectual infrastructure of the country.

“It represents a deliberate step toward strengthening the strategic capacity of Guyana, and more importantly, they directly follow the vision of our Commander-in-Chief to harness every resource to secure the future we seek,” the Chief of Defence Staff said.

The National Defence Institute was launched in 2024 as part of an effort by the Government to further protect Guyana’s national interest, while safeguarding the region against various threats.
