Berbice woman remanded to jail for murder of 7-year-old daughter

26-year-old, Berbice resident, Sarah Elizabeth Shivpersaud, was charged this morning for the murder of her 7-year-old daughter, who was strangled to death last week. The woman was immediately remanded to prison after her appearance at the New Amsterdam Magistrates Court.

The Prosecution’s case is that on Sunday, 5th April, 2025, the woman manually strangled her young daughter to death moments after posting a photograph on social media indicating that it would have been the last photograph with her and her two children.

Shivpersaud was handcuffed as she made her way in and out of the Courtroom this morning. She walked with a limp as a result of injuries she inflicted on herself.

The young child was laid to rest last Friday in her hometown of Fyrish.

Family members are still in disbelief over what took place. The woman reportedly became angry after her reputed husband left their home for several days following an argument between them. The man said on Sunday, the woman sent him a message that he had 15 minutes to return to the home. By the time he made it to the house, it was too late.

The woman’s mother and another relative broke into the house and found the woman unconscious next to the young daughter and a young son. It is suspected that she also tried to kill the baby boy.

The husband told investigators that whenever he and his wife had difficulties, she would try to use the children against him, but he never believed it would have reached a stage when she would take the life of their own daughter.
