Former Stabroek News Editor-In-Chief, Anand Persaud, will lead a new digital newspaper which is set to launch this coming Sunday, with a weekly printed edition expected to go to press before the end of the year.
According to a statement, the new online media platform will carry the name “Kiskadee Watch” and it will be supported by a team drawn from the former Stabroek News staffers.
The Stabroek News closed its doors in March 2026 after almost 40 years.
The statement from “Kiskadee Watch” said following the closure of Stabroek News and concerns about the void in credible reporting it created, a group of Guyanese locally and abroad, along with others worked together to launch the new online media platform.
According to the statement, the steering committee for the new media entity includes Janette Bulkan, Rhett Gordon, Jocelyne Josiah, GHK Lall, Cheryl Springer and Alissa Trotz.
“The vision for Kiskadee Watch is the reestablishing in Guyana of a trusted, independent, fact-based news institution that safeguards editorial freedom and strengthens democratic discourse. The production of a high-quality, weekly printed newspaper is expected before the end of the year,” the release noted.
According to the release, the news entity will draw on the financing model of the UK Guardian and the National Public Radio in the United States, based on share ownership and contributors – individuals, organizations/foundations, civil society and the business sector.
“The defence of press freedom and free expression comes at a significant cost. We invite Guyanese, here and abroad and all others who care about Guyana and the wider Caribbean to contribute to ensuring press freedom and accountability,” the release stated.
