Electric motorcycle rider critically injured in accident with Berbice Business executive

Police investigators have launched a probe into a Friday afternoon accident along the Fairfield Public Road in Region Five that has left an electric motorcyclist nursing multiple injuries. The injured man has been identified as Prakash Persaud.

Persaud was riding his small electric motorcycle when he was hit down by a 4×4 vehicle that was being driven by Berbice Business Executive, Samantha Reid, who had Georgetown Chamber of Commerce President, Kathy Smith, as her passenger.

The two were returning to Georgetown following the launch of the Berbice Business Expo.

The motorcyclist was rushed to the Mahaica Hospital just after the accident and later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where Doctors revealed he was suffering from internal bleeding and a broken collarbone.

Speaking briefly to News Source this morning, Ms. Reid, who was initially placed under arrest but later released on station bail, said she was driving the vehicle and on her way to Georgetown when she noticed the motorcyclist riding ahead of her.

She said just as she drove closer, the motorcycle suddenly veered in front of her, resulting in the rider being hit. She said her attempt to pull away from the collision resulted in her vehicle running off the road and into a fence.

“I was driving and when I was close to him, he made one sudden turn into me. I applied the brakes but I was too close, so the left hand side of the vehicle clipped him, and I pulled to the right and ended up in somebody’s fence. Immediately I came out of the vehicle and I started screaming for help, and we got him some help, and we took him to the hospital, and then his family started to come”, she explained.

Reid said she visited the Police Station after leaving the hospital, provided a statement and remained at the Police station until station bail was granted. A breathalyzer test was administered to Reid, and she was found to be below the legal limit for alcohol.

The Business Executive said she has been seeking regular updates about the man’s medical condition since the accident, and has also been in touch with his relatives. Reid said she is a regular driver along the Berbice roadway and is always cautious.

Meanwhile, family member of the injured man have stated that he remains hospitalized in a critical condition, with one relative stating that he continues to fight for his life.

Traffic Chief Mahendra Singh has stated that he will be looking into the investigation directly there are a number of noticeable inconsistencies in the report of the matter.
