Contractor charged and granted $1M bail over alleged abduction of Surinamese men

33-year-old Vigilance, East Coast Demerara resident, Jimol Murphy was today charged over the abduction of two men from Suriname, who are still to be found. Murphy, who is the brother of US sanctioned businessman and alleged drug trafficker, Mark Cromwell, was placed on $1 Million bail.

In a statement, the Guyana Police Force explained that the abduction took place on the 29th August at Rosignol in Berbice.

During his appearance in Court today, the 33-year-old man, whose occupation was listed as a contractor, was told that he was not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge.

The Prosecution objected to bail, but after the Defence Attorneys complained about the charge and the lack of sufficient evidence, the Magistrate granted bail in sum of $1 Million.

While Murphy appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, his case was heard virtually by the Court in Fort Wellington, Berbice.

Police investigators have been probing the disappearance of the two Surinamese men, who reportedly traveled to Guyana from neighbouring Suriname in late August.

During the investigations, the Police attempted to search the home of Murphy’s brother, Mark Cromwell. But that move triggered fiery protests in the village by a group over the past two days.  The brother was not listed as a suspect in the probe, but is reportedly out of the country.
