VAMED Engineering raises more questions over stalled British-financed hospital project

Austrian company, VAMED Engineering has flagged the Guyana Government’s handling of the €160 million British-financed Georgetown Maternal and Pediatric Hospital Project, as Britain’s King Charles begins a two-visit to Guyana.

In a statement today, the company, which remains in a legal battle with the Government over the project, said many uncomfortable questions remain over the project and it wants to know, how the multi-million healthcare project ended in termination and international arbitration, with the hospital still unfinished.

The company claims that the Government ceased payments for the project although the works done were certified by the Government’s engineering firm. VAMED said notwithstanding this fact, it kept building.

“For more than a year, we continued financing construction from our own resources despite prolonged nonpayment. Senior executives repeatedly travelled to Guyana and proposed solutions to keep the hospital project alive,” VAMED said.

However, in November 2025, the government reportedly allowed the loan agreement to expire without renewing it or informing VAMED that the agreement had not been renewed.

It said the situation leaves many lingering questions.

“Why wasn’t VAMED paid for work your own engineer certified? Why did the Ministry of Health fail to process payment certificates issued by VIKAB, the government’s appointed contract engineer? Why were certified amounts left unpaid, despite repeated reminders, while the Ministry continued allowing VAMED to carry out construction for more than a year at its own expense? Who decided not to authorise those payments, and why? Why was the British-backed financing allowed to expire,” the company questioned.

In September, the Full Court set aside five Preservation orders that were issued against the State in a High Court case brought against the Health Ministry by VAMED over the outstanding funds for the construction of the hospital.

The Full Court ruled that the Preservation Orders issued by Justice Renita Singh in the High Court could not stand.
