Police block WIN protest from proceeding close to State House; Hana Mohamed briefly held

It was a chaotic scene a short distance away from State House this afternoon as the Police blocked a protest from proceeding close to State House, where a reception for King Charles was taking place.

The protest was led by a small group of members and supporters of the main parliamentary opposition party, We Invest In Nationhood, as the party’s leader and Leader of the Opposition, Azruddin Mohamed remains in Police custody over allegations of bribing a Police Constable.

As the protest made its way along Carmichael Street towards State House, a party of Police Officers attempted to arrest and take away the placards from the sister of the Opposition Leader and other protesters.

The Police’s main target appeared to be Hana Mohamed, who is the sister of the Opposition Leader.

At one stage, there was a tussle between the Police and protesters as an attempt was made to arrest her as she demanded justice for her brother and demanded his release from Police custody.

Hana Mohamed was pulled towards a Police vehicle, but held her ground as the protesters shouted their support. Eventually, she was released as her husband arrived at the scene.

While leaving the scene, Hana Mohamed told reporters that she was peacefully protesting when the police attempted to arrest her. She said there is clear victimization taking place against the Leader of the Opposition and his supporters.

“I will leave. I will gladly leave as the police have instructed when they broke up our constitutional and democratic right to peacefully protest. We were peacefully protesting, with Members of Parliament, our city councillors, Guyanese from every walk of life. We were here in peaceful protest to call for reparations for slavery, to call for an apology from his Royal Highness, King Charles III, to call for the end to political victimization and persecution of the Leader of the Opposition,” Hana Mohamed said.

The protest continued into this evening as more supporters gathered but were blocked and kept away from close to State House as the reception for King Charles got underway.

The Opposition Leader was taken into custody yesterday on allegations that he paid a bribe to a Police Constable for providing him with a copy of the CCTV Surveillance video recordings of the shooting incident involving the Special Branch Head, who opened fire on a car with the Opposition Leader near a traffic light.  The Opposition Leader was in the Kitty area to document the Police presence outside the home of the Special Branch head, describing it as a waste of Government resources.
