The opposition, People’s National Congress Reform, which forms part of the APNU, has dispatched a letter to the Senior Minister responsible for Finance Minister and copied to the President, requesting a 25% salary increase for public servants for this year.
The Government is still to announce 2026 salary increases for public servants as the end of the year approaches.
Noting the increase in the cost of living, the PNCR said while Guyana is seen among the fastest growing economy in the world, public servants find themselves facing poverty as a result of rising prices.
According to the PNCR, based on the Government’s own wage bill for the public sector, a 25% increase for public servants would only represent 4% of this year’s national budget of $1.558 trillion.
The Opposition party said while it has been welcoming of the cash grants provided by the Government to citizens, the addition of increased wages and salaries will improve the quality of life of public servants.
The PNC said the increase in food prices in the past year cannot be ignored, with vegetable prices rising by more than 19% and overall food prices in the past year seeing an increase of more than 5%. The party said the national minimum wage in the public sector should also be increased and the Government must get down to collective bargaining with the Guyana Public Service Union to address salary increases and other issues for this year.
It also wants to see a standing annual wage review that links public sector pay to inflation and the oil revenues.
Public servants received a 10% salary increase in 2024 and an 8% salary increase last year as part of a two-year agreement between the Government and the Guyana Public Service Union.
