Bartica granny remanded to jail over cocaine and marijuana possession

In the Courtroom of the Chief Magistrate today, a domestic worker from Bartica was charged and remanded to jail for allegedly being in possession of cocaine and marijuana.

58-year-old Roxanne Carrington was arrested over the weekend after Police ranks found over three pounds of cocaine and five pounds of marijuana in her bedroom during a search.

The woman reportedly told the investigating ranks that the illegal drugs do no not belong to her and she was only keeping the bag with the illegal items for someone.

In Court today, she was represented by Attorney Latchmie Rahamat, who in her application for bail stated that her client was never found with the illegal items in her possession.

She explained that the woman usually rent rooms to miners heading into the interior region and in the room where the illegal drugs were found, two miners had been staying recently.  The Attorney provided the names of the miners although she could not give a location.

But the Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield, told the Court that the investigation links the woman directly to the possession of the illegal drugs. He said she even admitted that she collected the drugs from someone for safekeeping in her home.

The Chief Magistrate denied the bail application and the woman was remanded to jail. She will return to Court next week.
