Brazilian woman charged for gold smuggling granted $75,000 bail

The Brazilian woman, who was arrested last week along with a Brazilian man during an alleged gold smuggling bust, has been charged and granted bail in the sum of $75,000. The man is still to be charged.

39-year-old Erizangela De Olivera appeared in Court this morning before Magistrate Faith McGusty and pleaded not guilty to the gold smuggling charge. She was represented by Attorney Bernard DaSilva.

The accused was officially charged with purchasing gold from a person other than the Gold Board or an authorized agent of the Board contrary to the Laws of Guyana.

As part of her bail agreement, she will have to appear at the Special Organised Crime Unit of the Police Force every third Wednesday of the month.

In a statement announcing the bust last week, SOCU said its officer arrested two suspects and seized a large quantity of gold and money during the joint operation in the Lethem town.

A total of G$26 million was seized from the suspected gold smugglers. The Guyana Police Force said it has been leading a number of operations in collaboration with various mining groups and the GGMC to clamp down on gold smuggling.
