Drug Enforcement agents in Beligum and Colombia have informed their counterparts in Guyana about the discovery of two container shipments from Guyana that were nabbed with cocaine in those two countries.
One of the shipments contained rice, while the other contained chemicals.
In a statement this afternoon, Guyana’s Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit said while the shipments originated from Guyana, they were thoroughly inspected before they departed Guyana. CANU stated that at the time of the inspection in Guyana, no anomalies or irregularities were detected.
According to CANU, preliminary information indicates that the containers were transshipped en route to their final destinations, and as such, CANU believes it is highly likely that the consignments were contaminated during the transshipment process.
“This method of exploiting transhipment points to introduce illicit narcotics is a known tactic used by transnational drug trafficking networks seeking to circumvent security measures at ports of origin”, CANU stated.
The local drug enforcement agency stated that it is currently collaborating with its international counterparts as the investigations continue. CANU said given the sensitive nature of the ongoing inquiries, further details cannot be disclosed at this time, but noted that it remains steadfast in its commitment to combating narcotics trafficking and strengthening cooperation with regional and international partners to dismantle criminal networks.
CANU said it is also actively collaborating with domestic law enforcement and regulatory agencies, including the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) and the Guyana Police Force (GPF), as part of ongoing local investigations into this matter.
