Man remanded to jail for stabbing wife after she refused to give him money

A 24-year-old, Georgetown man was today remanded to prison after being charged with maliciously wounding his wife.

Magistrate Leron Daly refused bail to Jairam Alexander after reading the charge of malicious wounding to him.

It is alleged that on May 30, 2017 in Georgetown, Alexander unlawfully and maliciously wounded his wife after she refused to give him money. The woman was stabbed several times to her abdomen.

In court today, the Police prosecutor told the Magistrate that the woman had been abused before by her husband and therefore he objected to bail. The accused offered a not guilty plea, even as his visibly injured wife, who had to be assisted into the courthouse, looked on.

The matter will come up again later this month.
