One year in jail for electrician who stole 24 street lights

34-year-old electrician, Sharmo Jones, will be spending the next year in jail after pleading guilty to stealing 24 street lights from the community of La Bonne Intention on the East Coast of Demerara.

The Plaisance man was nabbed with the 24 street lights at his home and immediately admitted to stealing them from the power poles in the LBI village.

He appeared in Court recently and was charged for simple larceny. Jones did not waste the Court’s time and pleaded guilty to the charge, resulting in the 1 year prison sentence.

An investigation was launched by the Police into the missing street lights after residents of the new housing scheme complained that weeks after the lights were installed, they all vanished.

The matter was reported to Housing Minister Collin Croal during a community outreach, and he called in the Police to launch an investigation.

The Police said the street light stealing electrician was nabbed following intelligence received from a number of sources.
