Slowe calls for independent probe of “unprecedented” corruption allegations against Police Force

Former Chairman of the Police Service Commission and Retired Assistant Commissioner of Police, Paul Slowe, has indicated that the allegations of corruption that have been leveled against some members of the top brass of the Guyana Police Force, (GPF) has no precedence, and therefore should be properly investigated.

Slowe said the public image of the Police Force has been brought into disrepute over the last few years, with Senior Officers demonstrating that they are not fit for purpose.

He said while allegations of corruption have long been directed to the police, from junior to senior ranks, the recent claims involving reports of millions of dollars being carried around by Senior Ranks have never before made its way to Eve Leary—the seat of the Police Force’s top brass.

“There has never been as far as I know, any serious allegations or financial or other impropriety involving the top people in the force. So, its an unprecedented serious allegation and therefore you must have unprecedented measures to make sure that it is properly investigate,” Mr. Slowe noted.

Mr. Slowe said there must be a proper independent investigation into the allegations, less the Force risks being plagued with corrupt individuals, which can ultimately destroy the Police Force and hinder its work.

According to the retired senior officer, he does not believe any serious investigation into the allegations can be done by the Special Organised Crime Unit of the Force.

“If you want a proper investigation, send for independent people, perhaps ask the FBI—The government has been saying that it has a good relationship with the U.S, well then ask the FBI to conduct the investigation, ask the Scotland yard from the United Kingdom, or ask the Canadian mounted police and I believe once that is done, then people are going to have confidence in whatever the outcome is, but to ask a unit from the Guyana Police Force to investigate these senior people—maybe if it were junior ranks, but when the investigation can possibly touch the most senior ranks of the force I don’t have confidence that anybody here can investigate such a matter”, Slowe said.

On Monday, the Georgetown Chambers of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) issued a call for an independent investigation to be done into the corruption allegation against senior officers of the Guyana Police Force.

Vice President, Bharrat Jagdeo has already thrown his weight behind SOCU conducting the probe, saying that he believes it will be properly done.
