Three years in jail and $3.7M fine for North East La Penitence woman busted with cocaine

Three months after 27-year-old A’ishah McKenzie was busted with over five pounds of cocaine in her suitcase at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, she has been sentenced to three years in jail and fined $3.7 million.

The sentence was handed down on Wednesday at the Diamond Magistrates’ Court following the conclusion of the matter.

Back in February, McKenzie was preparing to board a flight from Georgetown to London via St. Lucia when the cocaine was discovered in her suitcase.

The bust was made by the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit.

CANU said its agents made the bust while carrying out a routine search of the woman’s suitcase. The cocaine was found stashed in the false sides of the suitcase.

There have been a number of failed attempts to get cocaine onto flights destined for London over the past few years.
