Two Guyanese-Canadian citizens who were preparing to board a Toronto bound flight at the Cheddi Jagan Airport were detained on Thursday after they were found in possession of over 15 ounces of raw gold. It is illegal to export raw gold without a license.
In a statement this morning, the Guyana Police Force said the 62-year-old man and 59-year-old woman were held at the airport after the gold was discovered stashed in their carry-on luggage.
The matter was reported and the two passengers were detained by Customs officials for further processing, the Police said.
The Police said the raw gold was weighed in their presence and amounted to 15.521 ounces in weight. A full investigation has since been launched and the two persons could face charges.
News Source understands that the raw gold carries an average price of over US$66,000.
