Woman and 3-year-old son die in suspected arson; Reputed husband in custody

A 29-year-old woman and her 3-year-old son lost their lives tragically on Monday morning in a fire that ripped through their Essequibo Coast home, and the woman’s reputed husband is suspected of setting the fire.

The dead woman has been identified as Donette Albert. Her son’s name has been given as Keron Latchman.

Police investigators in Region Two are probing the deaths as a murder case.

According to reports, the woman and her 31-year-old reputed husband were involved in a heated argument early on Monday morning. The man reportedly barged out of the house, but was spotted in the downstairs area moments before the entire house went up in flames.

A Police report stated that the man told investigators that he attempted to re-enter the house to rescue the woman and her son, but the intensity of the fire prevented him from doing so.

The Guyana Fire Service was summoned to the scene and responded promptly, but when the fire was extinguished, the charred remains of the young mother and her 3-year-old son were discovered.

The suspect was arrested and remains in custody as the investigation is ongoing. Charges are likely to be filed against him by the end of the week.
