
President Irfaan Ali has announced an across the board 10% retroactive salary increase for public servants. He made the announcement this morning while addressing Senior Police Officers at their Christmas Breakfast event.
The President said a two-year agreement, covering 2024 and 2025, has been struck with the Guyana Public Service Union.
Under the agreement, public servants will receive the 10% retroactive salary increase for this year and next year, they will get an 8% increase in their salaries.
“We have been able to agree with the union that for 2025, they will also see an increase in the salary of public servants of 8%, so we have signed a year agreement for 10% this year and 8% next year and that of course will take that accumulative increase much higher,” the President noted.
President Ali also announced salary adjustments for some categories of public sector workers.
Public Servants on scales 1-6 with a minimum of four years of service within the current scale will be moved to the mid-point of that scale, resulting in an increase as much as 13% for some public servants, this will be effective from July of this year.
Additionally, public servants on GS 1-6 with a minimum of 8 years of service within the current scale will be moved to the maximum of that scale, seeing an increase as much as 26% for some public servants.
Further, public servants at the minimum of scale 7-8 upon obtaining 4 years of service will be paid a monthly amount equivalent to the nominal difference of the mid point of GS6.
The President also announced the introduction of qualification incentives effective next month. Public servants with ACCA qualification will be paid $15,000 monthly, while those with a Masters degree will get an additional $22,000 and those with Doctoral degrees will get an additional $32,000 monthly.
“This is in keeping with our commitment of incentivizing education and training and development of our human capital. Additionally, a $5,000 annual increase in uniform allowance for eligible categories of health workers and also $10,000 increase for public servants, resulting in an increase of much if 77% in this allowance,” the President announced.
There will also be a housing allowance of $35,000 for public servants on secondment transfer to hinterland location as of January 2024., and there will be an $8,000 allowance for public servants stationed in riverine and hinterland areas.
Public servants will also see an increase in their motor car and travel allowances, the President announced.
