35-year-old Attorney found murdered in car outside Durban Backlands home

35-year-old Attorney-at-law, Richard Layne, was found murdered in his car on the bridge of his Durban Backlands home in Georgetown on Wednesday night.

The body was discovered by Layne’s roommate, Police Sergeant, Tony Sulker.

According to a statement from the Police Force, Sulker told investigators that he woke up at around 10pm to use the washroom and noticed Layne’s car parked on the bridge with his body slumped over the steering wheel.

The man told investigators that he rushed to the car, but it was locked. He said he made contact with the man’s mother who rushed across from her Campbellville home and they made a decision to break the window of the car.

On entry, they noticed stab wounds to the neck of the Attorney and contacted emergency services. He was rushed to the hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.

The Police also reported that a relative of the dead man, Michael Harding, told investigators that earlier in the night, he visited the Attorney’s home where they hung out for a while before heading across to Starbucks. Harding reportedly told investigators that they returned to the home at just after 8pm and he left for his home in Eccles. He said when he left the house, the roommate was asleep and the Attorney’s car was parked in the garage.

Police investigators said the young Attorney sustained two stab wounds to his neck. A number of CCTV cameras in the area are being reviewed for possible evidence that could lead to an arrest in the murder case.

Attorney Richard Layne was admitted to the local bar at the age of 22 and later worked at the Caribbean Court of Justice in Trinidad and Tobago, before returning to Guyana to continue his work as an Attorney. He was the grandson of late High Court Judge, Justice James Patterson.
