$7.3 Billion approved for GECOM ahead of 2025 Elections; -19,000 polling day staff to be trained

Just over $7.3 Billion has been approved for the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) as it prepares for the hosting of general elections this year.

Ahead of approving the sum for the Constitutional body, the Parliamentary Committee of Supply was told by the Minister of Governance and Parliamentary Affairs, Gail Teixeira that 19,000 temporary election staffers will be trained as part of the preparations for elections.

A total of $193M has been set aside for Education and Training.

“This is involving 19,000 people being trained for election day staff. That figure that we gave and the amounts, this is going to cover the training programme…so, 19,000 people have to be trained as election day staff,” Minister Teixeira explained.

The Committee of Supply has also approved $1.8B for GECOM’s operating expenses, while $227.3M has been set aside for the rental of buildings.

Further, $1.114B has been approved for the acquisition of goods and services including civic education programmes, production of infomercials and publication of election-related notices.

The sum also caters for security services that would be required during the course of the elections, particularly, at the various GECOM offices throughout the country.

The Committee also provided clearance for $1.7B to cover employment costs and a further $1.6B for wages, and salaries associated with the pending elections.

In 2024, $2.9B was approved for the Elections Commission.
