AFC demands Police Officer be charged for murder of Lindener, Keon Fogenay

Leader of the Alliance For Change (AFC), Nigel Hughes today demanded that the Police officer who shot and killed 32-year-old Keon Fogenay during the recent protests in Linden, be charged with murder.

Fogenay was on his way home when he was shot and killed as other residents protested the Police killing of another Lindener, Ronaldo Peters.

While a Police Sergeant has since been charged and remanded for the murder of Peters, the family of Keon Fogenay is still holding out for justice.

At a press conference today, the AFC Leader, Nigel Hughes said the failure of the Police to charge one of their own with the murder of Fogenay is unacceptable.

“We repeat our demand that the person responsible for murdering Mr Fudgenay be charged forthwith. The fact that they charged one police officer with the first killing is not enough,” the AFC Leader said.

Hughes said in addition to video evidence, the Guyana Police Force was provided with a detailed statement by eyewitnesses, who also identified the police officer who shot Fogenay.

“We know that the evidence exists and the evidence has been given to Guyana Police Force. I was present when the statement was taken by the Office of Professional Responsibility. The difficulty with not charging him is that it continues to result in the erosion of the public confidence in the Guyana Police Force,” Hughes said.

Earlier this week, the Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum told reporters that the investigation into the death of Fogenay was conducted by the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) in collaboration with the Regional Security System (RSS) and not the Force’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

That investigation is ongoing.
