Teen fisherman burnt to body in Police custody; Cops say he was playing with fire

The Office of Professional Responsibility of the Guyana Police Force has launched an investigation into the burning of a 17-year-old youth while in Police custody.

The young man, Jaheim Peters has claimed that he was tortured by the Police after being arrested and dumped in the lock-ups of the Vigilance Police station.

However, the Guyana Police Force in an official statement claimed that while Peters was in the lock-ups, he was playing with a lighter and ignited a fire on his t-shirt. According to the Police, the teen was alone in the lock-ups but was allegedly provided with the lighter by someone who was sitting on the station’s “bench”.

The 17-year-old, who is a fisherman from the East Coast community of Annandale, was seen in a video recording at the hospital, handcuffed at his hands and feet with severe burns to the side of his body and parts of his chest.

The Guyana Police Force in its statement said the teen was arrested as part of an investigation into an alleged robbery report.

Two Police Officers have since been placed under close arrest while the matter is being investigated by the Police Force’s Office of Professional Responsibility.
