Man dies in police custody, OPR launches probe

The Office of Professional Responsibility has launched an investigation into the death of a West Coast Demerara man who was found lying on the floor in the lock ups at the Parika Police station and later pronounced dead at the Leonora Hospital.

The man, 28-year-old Zaharadeen Razan was taken into police custody on Tuesday evening after a report of damage to property was made against him. When checks were made in the lock ups on Wednesday morning, the man wad discovered motionless on the floor.

In a statement, the Guyana Police Force said that other prisoners in the lock ups were questioned before the man was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The investigation was immediately handed over to the Police Office of Professional Responsibility after it was suspected that the police officers who were on duty on Tuesday night may have had something to do with the man’s injuries which led to his death.

Late last year, another West Demerara man died after he was held in Police custody. While the man’s family maintained that he was beaten by the police, the officers on duty said he was attacked and beaten by another prisoner. He died from his injuries.

The Director of Public Prosecutions advised that charges be laid against the other prisoner who was in the lock ups at the time and not the policemen who were on duty.
