Welfare officers in the Berbice region are probing the beating of a young boy allegedly by Police officers while in Police custody.
The 14-year-old boy was allegedly taken into Police custody last week after being accused of stealing a phone belonging to a resident in the same Springlands, Berbice community where he lives.
When Welfare Officers decided to check on the child after being informed that he was in the lock up, it was discovered that he had several marks of violence to the body. The teen claimed that he had been beaten by Police officers at the station.
The youth was transferred to another station in the Berbice area, even as Welfare Officers probed the complaint.
An investigation was launched by the Police Force itself and according to the B’ Division Commander, the investigation is expected to be completed by today.
The Commander is expected to receive the file from the investigating officers today and send it on for further legal advice.
