The Alliance For Change has unveiled its wish list of requirements for a coalition with A Partnership for National Unity, and topping that list is for its Leader, Nigel Hughes to be the Presidential Candidate and for a 60-40 division of all positions in Government, with the APNU receiving 60% and the Alliance for Change picking up the remaining 40%.
The two sides have been meeting on the possibility of a coalition ahead of the upcoming elections and the release of the AFC’s demands on Sunday night could likely pour cold water on the prospect of an APNU and AFC Coalition ahead of the elections.
In its Sunday statement, the AFC said its National Executive Committee held a special meeting and approved the conditions for coalition with APNU.
The AFC conditions also include that in a case where the AFC does not get the nudge for the Presidential Candidate position, it is proposing that the Party from which the Presidential Candidate is named, shall not be permitted to nominate and/or occupy the position of the Leader of the List.
The statement from the AFC came a day after PNC/R Leader, Aubrey Norton said his party has the largest block in the coalition and will not be used. In effect, Mr. Norton said while he is committed to coalition politics, the PNC/R carries the bulk of the support.
The PNCR is the largest party in the APNU.
Negotiating teams from both APNU and AFC were locked in arms for months over the issue of a Presidential candidate. Those talks now appear have to fallen flat as the negotiations have come to an end.
Back in 2015, the APNU and AFC entered into a coalition based on an agreement known as The Cummingsburg Accord. The coalition campaigned on that Accord, and won the elections that year. The Accord was renewed for the 2020 elections, which the coalition lost.
When the Accord expired, the AFC opted not to renew it, while maintain its seats in the National Assembly as coalition.
