AG takes Full Court ruling against Finance Minister to Court of Appeal

Having failed to get the Full Court to put a stay on a High Court Judge’s order for the Finance Minister to pay up a judgment against the Government or face jail time, the Attorney General has now taken the matter to the Court of Appeal.

The case is related to the awarding of judgment for Dipcon Construction against the state of Guyana. The state has been ordered to pay over US$2million for the case that came over from the previous PPP Civic administration.

In his appeal, the Attorney General stated that the Full Court erred and misdirected itself when it ordered that Winston Jordan being sued in his personal capacity, still being Minister of Finance could not be represented by the Attorney General.

Additionally, he said the Full Court erred and misdirected itself when it did not consider the High Court action for a judicial review.

The Attorney General’s Chambers is also contending that the Full Court erred when it refused to grant the stay of the execution of the order for contempt made by Justice Priya Sewnarine- Beharry on the 24th June, 2019;

He now wants the Court of Appeal to set aside the order made by the Full Court and he also wants an order for a stay of execution while the matter is being appealed.

The Finance Minister at a press conference today said he does not understand why he is facing possible jail time for something he is not responsible for.

He said many of the judgments against the current government are as a result of lawlessness committed by the former PPP Civic government and the many of the judgments were as a result of bad representation.

He said the judgments could run the country into paying out billions of dollars for the decisions by the former Government.

Jordan said he is no gangster and he does not see why he is facing damage to his personal reputation for the actions of the previous administration.
