The Government Analyst – Food and Drug Department is once again advising food importers to ensure that when importing milk for release for sale on our local market, the product must be in compliance with the prescribe standards of the Food and Drug Regulation or that of the International Food Standard Codex Alimentarius.

The Department announced on Tuesday that it was forced  refuse entry to four containers with Evaporated Milk, Condensed Milk and / or Sweetened Condense Milk.

According to the Department, the shipment was refused entry because the products are non-complaint with the prescribe standard for Evaporated Milk, Condense Milk and / or Sweetened Condense Milk as found in regulations 13 & 14 Division # (5) of the Food and Drug Regulations 1977 and the International Food Standard Codex STD for milk fat products (CODEX STAN 280-1973) Codex Alimentarius.

It said that in all cases, milk fat was substituted with various forms of vegetable fat.

The action to disallow the entry of the products into the country was the result of “unprecedented support and cooperation received from the Guyana Revenue Authority (Customs Department)”, a statement from the Food and Drug Department said.

The Brands which have been refused entry are Best Liat Sweetened Condense Milk, Global Sweetened Condensed Milk and Tastu Evaporated Creamer.

The release said that “according to the prescribe standard Evaporated Milk shall contain no less than 25.0% milk solids and 7.5 % milk fat, while Condense Milk or Sweetened Condense Milk shall contain no less than 28.0% milk solids and 8.0% milk fat.”
