Azruddin Mohamed and Nazar Mohamed declare innocence of charges in US indictment

After being granted bail this afternoon in the Magistrates’ Court following the filing of an extradition request, father and son businessmen, Nazar and Azruddin Mohamed, declared their innocence of the charges of mail and wire fraud related to the export of gold and money laundering that are contained in the US indictment, which was revealed earlier this month.

After posting bail, the elder Mohamed said he believes all of the claims and charges stem from a Reuters news article two years ago that first revealed allegations of gold smuggling. Nazar Mohamed said based on the article, one of the writers was in contact with a senior Guyana Government official on the issue.

“You need to find out who was this Senior Government official that the media was speaking to”, he stated.

The younger Mohamed, Azruddin Mohamed expressed surprise at the manner in which he was arrested. He was surrounded by a number of masked and heavily armed Police Officers along with investigators outside the GRA Smyth Street Office.

“They had Narain and Sarabo pull up with six or seven vehicles with more than 20 gunmen in mask and i thought they wanted to kill me there or execute me there, and I asked what was the problem because these are the same guys, that follow my move every day, these same Special Branch guys’, Mohamed stated.

He said he has no doubt that it is the Guyana Government that has been pushing the claims that are now contained in the US indictment. He said, however, that since the sanction document that was handed down against him last year made reference to Government officials also being involved, he would also like to see those officials before the Courts.

“I am innocent, this business, this gold business, the exportation of gold is not my business, it is my father’s business…I am a gold miner, but they used this hoping to get a sanction…All I have to say is that the Government is fully behind the sanctions and it has agents working in the United States of America that they are in talks with”, Mohamed stated.

He said both President Ali and Vice President Jagdeo should be in Court alongside him, as he accused them of being involved in criminality. Mr. Mohamed said he believes the main objective of the charges, the sanctions and the extradition request is to block his political ambitions.
