Longtime executive member of the People’s Progressive Party, Dr. Roger Luncheon passed away this morning at the Georgetown Hospital, where he was recovering from an ailment. He was a patient of the hospital for several weeks.

Dr. Luncheon served as Cabinet Secretary and Head of the Presidential Secretariat for more than 20 years under various PPP Civic Governments.

He was considered to be a key player in the Government and was behind many major decisions made over the years. He also once served as Secretary to the Defence Board.

In paying tribute, President Irfaan Ali this morning said Dr. Luncheon was an exceptional patriot and national icon who was fearless and selfless in his complete commitment to national development and defence of a free and democratic Guyana.

The President said his death is a painful and deep-wounded loss for the Government and Party.

Dr. Luncheon served as Cabinet Secretary and Head of the Presidential Secretariat throughout the entire 12 year Presidency of Bharrat Jagdeo.

He said Dr. Roger Luncheon was a true son of the soil who helped to shape the lives of many, adding that he has left a rich legacy of true commitment to service, patriotism, and a deep sense of national pride and hard work for the people of Guyana.

In 2014, Dr. Luncheon announced to the media that he was diagnosed with cancer in 2013 and that it had started to spread around his body. While he transferred some of his roles and functions, he remained on the job until 2015 when the PPP lost the elections. He remained active in the PPP, and when the party regained power in 2020, he was rehired in an advisory position at the Office of the President.

Party officials this morning described him as a longtime stalwart of the party who had selflessly dedicated himself to the public service in Guyana and made several contributions to the political landscape.
