Assistant Commissioner of Police Calvin Brutus is putting up a fight against high-ranking members of the Guyana Police Force and the Special Organized Crime Unit, claiming misconduct and abuse of power.
In his new multimillion dollar lawsuit against the Attorney General and a number of senior Police Officers, Brutus is alleging wrongful actions committed by the senior officers between July 1 and October 24, 2024.
Mr. Brutus had previously withdrawn the lawsuit he had filed against SOCU and the government, and in his new suit, he has singled out officials within the Force and government who he believes wronged him.
The lawsuit has named Head of SOCU, Asst. Commissioner Fazil Karimbaksh; Asst. Commissioner, Ravindradat Budhram; Assistant Commissioner, Errol Watts; Deputy Head of SOCU, Mahadeo Singh; Finance Officer, Bharat Persaud among others, along with the Attorney General of Guyana, Anil Nandlall.
Brutus stated in his claim that the officers listed in the lawsuit engaged in misconduct, unlawful behaviour, and abuse of power while performing their official duties, causing significant harm, loss, and damage to his personal and business reputation.
He said due to the freezing of his bank accounts he has lost the ability to pay for his Doctoral degree and he has also suffered reputation and self-esteem damages.
He also claims that the entire incident has left him in a state of constant anxiety and trauma and noted that the cases against him, especially the claims of money laundering have stained his reputation and credibility.
Brutus is seeking general damages exceeding $300 million dollars for malfeasance in public office, including misconduct, abuse of power, and other unlawful actions. He is also seeking special damages in excess of $100 million dollars for losses related to income, reputation, emotional distress, and economic hardship.
