On the 183rd anniversary of the Guyana Police Force, the recently appointed Police Service Commission announced the promotions of more than 350 senior and junior officers.

Among topping the promotions list are Errol Watts, Wendell Blanhum and Calvin Brutus who are among the senior officers promoted to the rank of Assistant Police Commissioner. Five other Senior Superintendents have been promoted to the same position.

A total of 89 other Police Officers were promoted to senior positions. On the junior officer side, more than 350 officers have been promoted.

The move by the Police Service Commission to announce the promotions come just two days after another member of the Commission was sworn in.

It also follows a move to the Court by the Chairman of the last Police Service Commission, retired Asst. Commissioner Paul Slowe seeking an injunction to block the PSC from effecting any promotions while the Court is still hearing the earlier case against the President’s decision to suspend the members of the former PSC and the Force not giving effect to the promotions that were made by the former Police Service Commission.

In June 2021, the former Police Service Commission announced a number of senior promotions after the Chief Justice dismissed a challenge to the promotions by Senior Superintendent Calvin Brutus who was left off of the promotion list. He filed his Court action even before the final list was announced last year. Brutus has now been promoted to the position of Asst. Commissioner by the new Service Commission while some other Officers who were promoted under the former PSC have not found favour with the new PSC.

The former acting Top Cop, Deputy Commissioner Nigel Hoppie never made moves to effect the promotions made by the former PSC and his decision is also now the subject of a Court matter.
