Businessman shoots two bandits during robbery; one dies and the other hospitalized

The businessman was shot to his left arm by the same bandit but as they attempted to make their escape, the businessman whipped out his firearm and fired several shots behind them.

A bandit was shot dead on Saturday and one of his accomplices badly injured after they robbed a businessman of his jewellery.

The incident took place on Saturday afternoon outside a snackette at Grove on the East Bank of Demerara. According to a police report, the businessman who is the holder of a licensed firearm, stopped at the snackette to make a purchase and was accosted by four motorcycle riding bandits.

One of the bandits who was armed, held the businessman at gunpoint and robbed him of his jewellery as the others kept watch.

The businessman was shot to his left arm by the same bandit but as they attempted to make their escape, the businessman whipped out his firearm and fired several shots behind them.

One of the bandits was hit to the chest and was pronounced dead at the Diamond Hospital. A second bandit was hit to the neck and right hand. He was admitted to the Georgetown Hospital and remains under police guard.

The other two accomplices made good their escape in a hail of gunfire but it is believed that one of them was also injured.

The dead bandit is still to be identified.
