CAL terror threat came from Barbados

Security and Intelligence officials in Guyana have confirmed that the terror threat which triggered heightened security at the Cheddi Jagan Airport came from Barbados.

According to the officials who asked not to be named, Caribbean Airlines first received the threat over the weekend at its Barbados office in Bridgetown. “The threat came in the form of a phone call to the Barbados Caribbean airlines office and the person on the line identified the flights out of Guyana to the United States on Monday as the terror target”, one of the officials explained.

Other details were not provided.

News Source understands that the Barbados office immediately  contacted the Trinidad and Tobago headquarters of Caribbean Airlines and the information was passed on to the Cheddi Jagan International Airport and security officials in Guyana and the United States.

The information triggered an emergency advisory from the United States Embassy which warned American citizens against travelling on Caribbean Airlines flights to the U.S from Guyana during the period Monday, 10th February to Wednesday 12th February.

Intelligence officials in Guyana, Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago with help from the United States are continuing their probe of the threat and are focusing on the possible source of the call in the island of Barbados.

Guyana’s Cheddi Jagan International Airport remained on high alert on Monday. Additional security measures have been put in place with the Guyana Defence Force being called out to provide security assistance.

The Government of Guyana has indicated that all steps are being taken to ensure security at the airport remains at a high level. Caribbean Airlines has also indicated that it has increased its own security of its flights as all of its flights remain on schedule.

The airline has two US schedule flights out of Guyana on Monday.
