Chinese national dies in workplace accident at Windows processing factory

A Chinese national, identified as Eddie Yang, who was working at the Zheng Xin Doors and Windows factory at Grove on the East Bank of Demerara, lost his life on Saturday when a large quantity of glass stored in a 40-ft container collapsed on him.

The Labour Ministry has launched an investigation.

A report from the Ministry said the man’s co-workers raised an alarm after the collapse of the large quantity of glass and assisted in getting the trapped man out. However, he was pronounced dead after he was rushed to the hospital.

Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act, Chapter 99:06 of the Laws of Guyana, the Ministry has initiated an investigation led by Senior Occupational Safety and Health Officer Mr. Darwin Bourne and OSH Officer Mr. Ray Hosannah. The investigation aims to determine the cause of the incident and to ensure full compliance with safety regulations at the workplace.

The Minister of Labour, Joseph Hamilton, has reminded employers and workers of the importance and need for good safety and health practices in the workplace so that similar incidents/accidents that can result in the loss of life can be avoided.
