The new Jewelz by Kings Hotel officially opened its doors last Friday, with its owners promising guests an elegant mixture of comfort and luxury.
Standing nine stories tall where the popular WaterChris Hotel once stood on Waterloo Street in Georgetown, boasts 61 luxury rooms with all the modern amenities needed for a business or vacation visit.
The Chairman of the Kings Group of Companies, Looknauth Persaud, said the opening of Jewelz marks the start of an important chapter in the history of King’s Hotel in Guyana, and augurs well for the country’s tourism and hospitality industry.

From a goldsmith and jeweler to a hotelier, Persaud said he is proud of his family’s many successes as it builds on the foundation laid in 1970 when King’s started with just one goldsmith and two apprentices. Today, it is an internationally recognized brand.
He said Jewelz will add to the family’s already rich history in the hospitality sector.
“At this moment we are getting requests from many associations for rooms, and so I can see the future of this hotel being a great place,” he said.
The Hotel’s Director, Renata Persaud said the opening of Jewelz by Kings reflects a response to a call by President Irfaan Ali in 2020, for companies to tap into the tourism sector by building more hotels to meet the growing demand for hotel rooms in the country.

“Fast forward today, Jewelz, build not just with bricks and steel but with vision, courage and a team of luxury that runs within our family blood line. With inspiration, persistence, and endless support from friends and family, a few more, we wanted additional loan from Demerara Bank, we grew. Seven years later, here we are, from 17 rooms to 61 rooms built with love, arguments, laughs and a whole lot of concrete,” Renata Persaud said.
During the opening ceremony, President Irfaan Ali said even in the absence of the Oil and Gas Industry, King’s contributed to the development of Guyana. He said when the country was “little known,” it was still known for King’s Jewelry.
The President said the opening of the hotel is not only an achievement for the family but for the entire country.

“This is Guyana’s achievement. If we try to narrow this to this family achievement, we will be doing an immense disservice to the sacrifices, the time and investment of this family because they did it for Guyana. They did it for the development and advancement of our country. So, today, we are celebrating Guyana, and I am proud to be part of this team celebrating Guyana,” the president said.
He said the opening of Jewelz is the continuing journey of Guyana’s ongoing success story. For its part, the President said the Administration is building a complete ecosystem for the development of the Tourism Sector.
In 2020, 86,000 persons visited Guyana. Since then, the number has increased significantly, with over 371,000 persons visiting the country in 2024. (Svetlana Marshall)
