Crane operator crushed to death as Crane topples at construction site for shore base facility

An operator of a Crane lost his life after being crushed by the heavy duty machinery moments after he jumped from it as it flipped while piles were being planted at the construction site for a shore base facility on the East Bank of Demerara.

The dead crane operator has been identified as Shawn Joseph. The incident took place just around midday today.

Construction works at the private development are being undertaken by the Tepui Group. One of the managers at that company, Mikhail Rodrigues aka “Guyanese Critic”, told reporters that he was at the worksite when the accident occurred and witnessed everything.

He said the operator jumped from the crane after it tilted, but got crushed as he remained stationery where he landed.

“The operator was a contracted operator…I was standing there at the time and as you can see there are requirements for safety”, Rodrigues said.

Rodrigues said the man was pinned by the fallen heavy duty equipment. He said all safety procedures were being followed and he believes the investigations by the Police and the Labour Ministry will prove that.

“We have been in par with all safety regulations and requirements and the investigations will vindicate us’, he noted.

Ministry of Labour investigators and the Police were spotted at the scene kickstarting their probe. The dead man’s family was notified about the fatal accident, moments after it took place.
