
The Ministry of Education will begin the distribution of the $55,000 cash grant for school children across the country from next Monday, Minister of Education Priya Manickchand announced today.
More than 200,000 children from public and private schools are expected to benefit from the annual cash grant distribution, which includes the school uniform and supplies voucher.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the Ministry’s Arrival Day programme today, the Minister said the grant has been increased to $50,000 and the additional $5,000 will be given to students as a uniform allowance and for school supplies.
“I am very happy to say that next week on the 12th May which is Monday we will begin the distribution in regions 9 and 7 and the following week we will begin in regions 2 and 5 and every other region will follow thereafter,” the Minister noted.
With relation to the criteria for the grant, the Education Minister reminded every public and private school child from Nursery Year One to Grade 10 in High Schools, who is on a school’s register and is attending school will be eligible to receive the grant.
She also explained that if parents or guardians are unable to uplift the grant on the scheduled date, they can visit their respective Regional Education Office to uplift the grant at a time that is convenient to them.
Additionally, it was explained that persons can authorise a third party to uplift the grant on their behalf.
“This is an extremally smooth you would have to follow very carefully online and other platforms when your region is going to be served and which school is going to be served, this year we have the most location possible, we will try to do every school in the school itself,” the Minister noted.
The Minister noted that if a person cannot present a valid form of ID, one can provide a verification letter that has been verified by the school’s principal, Village leader or Toshao.
The Auditor General’s office is expected to oversee the distribution of the cash grant in all of the regions.
