The country’s energy sector is poised to benefit from a further $88 Billion this year as the Government pushes to stabilize sector, Finance Minister Dr. Ashni Singh has said.
The main focus, he said, is to boost the capacity of the Guyana Power and Light Company as well as to ensure the gas-to energy project is on stream.
“In response to the growing demand for electricity generation because the economy is growing as rapidly as it is, within the first four year of our current we added over 171 megawatts of new generating capacity,” the Finance Minister said.
He said investments in GPL have seen the operationalization of the 46.5-megawatt power plant at Garden of Eden, the installation of 28.9 megawatt at the Colombia sub-station and the sourcing of over 96 megawatts from the two power ships that have been rented.

In addition, the Finance Minister said the Government has been spending more to upgrade the country’s electricity network. He announced that over 1,300 transformers were installed and over 3,000 were serviced while 2800 distribution networks were upgraded.
As it relates to Hinterland electrification, Dr. Singh said 25 mini grids were installed and more than 30,000 solar panels were distributed in the Hinterland.
Singh said the Government is looking to complete all major works on the gas-to energy project this year having spent $136.1B on the project last year.
The 300 megawatts project is expected to come on stream this year with the administration already looking at a second component of the project, which will see an additional 250 megawatts of electricity being placed on the national grid.
