According to a Police statement, the victim was spotted by the accused sitting in front of his yard on Saturday afternoon and the armed himself with a cutlass and chopped the man repeatedly about the body.

A 43-year-old man became the Essequibo’s latest murder victim on Saturday when he was chopped to death by a neighbour.

Dead is Andrew Drakes of Pump Station Street, Farm on the East Bank of Essequibo. 

Drakes was attacked and chopped to death by a 20-year-old man who claimed that he had been sexually assaulted by the older man at his home on Friday. Details of the nature of the assault were not released.

According to a Police statement, the victim was spotted by the accused sitting in front of his yard on Saturday afternoon and the armed himself with a cutlass and chopped the man repeatedly about the body.

The two men lived next to each other.

It was an off-duty Police woman who was in the area at the time who managed to pursue and arrest the suspect, with the support of several persons from the community.

The badly injured, Andrew Drakes, was taken to the Leonar hospital, where he was pronounced dead. 

The matter is being investigated as the suspect remains in custody.
