On Sunday, a number of flights were forced to divert to other countries after the Airport management. reported that a storm had knocked out the runway lights, and the back-up system.

Many of the flights that were diverted last evening were able to land today and those flights that were cancelled last night and early this morning, were eventually rescheduled to depart today.

More than ten flights were accommodated today, the Airport management said.

According to the Ministry of Works, the crucial runway lighting system incurred damage last Sunday due to severe thunderstorms and lightning strikes. The airport’s maintenance crew was assisted by technicians from the Guyana Power and Light Company in their repair works.
