A fired agent of Guyana’s Customs Anti Narcotics Unit has been sentenced to four years in jail for his role in the trafficking of a quantity of cocaine at the Cheddi Jagan Airport.

The man, Kurt Sunich along with another man, Israel George, were both charged for cocaine trafficking after a quantity of cocaine was found in the washroom area at the airport in the shape of shoe soles.

George was also found guilty. They will both have to pay an additional $1.6Million fine as part of the sentence.

When Sunich was arrested and charged, he had already been dismissed by CANU in relation to another issue. He had reportedly worked with the drug enforcement agency for a number of years.

The Prosecution’s case was that the two men worked together in their attempt to get the cocaine out, but that attempt was quashed once the illgeal substance was found hidden by CANU agents at the airport.
